Since the advent of internet telephony, many residential offerings have evolved to compete with traditional local and long distance telephone service providers. These services save households money by using the public internet to bypass traditional local loops and long distance lines. They send voice calls by converting analog signals into digital packets that travel over the internet. This type of transmission is called Voice over Internet Protocol or Voice over IP (VoIP). The packets are then re-combined at their destination back into voice so that you can converse with your called party.

There are three typical VoIP services in use today:

Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) - An analog telephone adapter (ATA) allows you to connect a standard telephone to the Internet. It essentially converts analog signals from your traditional phone into digital data to transmit over the Internet. ATAs are simple to use, easy to set up, inexpensive, and are a great alternative to traditional home phone lines. Many major VoIP providers like Vonage supply ATAs for free when you sign up for their services.

Hosted IP Phone Service – Hosted IP phone services use a central IP softswitch that IP telephones connect to over the internet. IP phones have the same appearance as normal telephones, but instead of having a traditional phone jack, they have an Ethernet connector. These phones connect directly to your Internet router and contain all of the necessary technology to directly handle the IP phone call; no conversion is necessary. The hosted provider provisions the IP phones to connect to their IP Phone switch so that they can route your voice calls over the internet to your called party.

Computer-to-Computer – Using VoIP to make calls from computer to computer was the earliest form of internet telephony. You just need the software, a headset with microphone or speakers with a microphone, a sound card, and a good internet connection. Typically there is no charge to make these calls, and the software can even be downloaded for free. Common services include Skype and Yahoo! Messenger.

So how do businesses take advantage of VoIP?

Some businesses subscribe to VoIP services through providers like Vonage or local cable TV companies like Comcast. By connecting the analog trunk ports of their current phone system directly to the VoIP service providers ATA, businesses can convert their calls to VoIP and save on local and long distance charges. These services disconnect your phone system from the public switched telephony network (PSTN) and connect it to the provider’s IP softswitch for call routing over the internet.

Another popular business VoIP service that is rapidly developing is SIP trunking. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is a service offered by an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) that also allows businesses to connect their IP PBX or traditional PBX directly to the internet. SIP trunking services disconnect your phone system from the PSTN and connect it to a SIP softswitch which is also connected to the internet.

The SIP softswitch will determine if your call is being made to a PSTN number or to another SIP enabled phone system. It will then route your call through the Internet to wherever it is directed. SIP trunking will allow your phone system to handle as many phone calls as traditional analog and digital T1 services and can dramatically reduce local and long distance costs by routing appropriate calls over the public internet.

How You Can Make Cheaper Calls Abroad Using VoIP (Voice Over IP)

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, has revolutionised the way we make international calls. Rather than relying on the traditional landline system, VoIP incorporates the very latest cutting edge technology, broadband Internet connections and the simple concept of marrying up this high-end tech to your telephony needs. And if you call abroad on a regular basis, it could save you a fortune on your monthly phone bill.

How VoIP works

VoIP first appeared around 15 years ago, as the development of more stable Internet connections made it possible to send audio data packets from one computer to another using the existing Internet connection. But there were teething problems. Whether those calls are to speak to family, friends or even business associates, VoIP call plans allow callers to bundle specific locations into their package and make cheap calls to selected destinations. So if you have family or business contacts in India, for example, you can develop a flexible package that allows you to make unlimited free calls to numbers in this region, as well as cheaper calls to all other domestic and international numbers. And the voice clarity is as good as it would be if you were dialling a local number.

To take advantage of VoIP for cheaper calls, the first thing to do is make sure you have a broadband connection that runs at a speed that will be able to support VoIP. By talking to a VoIP provider, they will be able to confirm that your broadband connection is able to support Voice over IP connections. It is then a matter of selecting a call plan that suits your call requirements. Call plans for VoIP are flexible, allowing customers to choose particular regions and bundle them into a package that offers cheaper calls to these destinations. By either replacing your existing handset with a VoIP set or by adapting your handset to take and make VoIP calls, you are then ready to start saving money on all your calls abroad.

Last January 04, we submitted an article entitled “The Top Seven Threats To Your Computer in 2007″ and we listed Voice over IP (VoIP) as the number four threat. Two weeks later, the Computerworld website came out with an article entitled “VoIP Soon To Be A Target Of…Hackers”. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Computerworld, it is a website targetted more towards advanced computer users (“geeks” is the industry-standard appellation).

VoIP is not an entirely new technology, in fact it has been around since the mid-1990′s. At that time, home internet users mostly connected through dial-up and the maximum speed was 56Kbps. High speed connections were limited mostly to big businesses who paid, what by today’s standards are, ridiculously high fees for dedicated connections. High speed connection was a prerequisite for good quality connections, otherwise the connections would be choppy when done through dial-up.

Nowadays, with broadband internet affordable for households and businesses around the world, VoIP has become a common internet staple. Internet providers and telecommunications companies are falling over each other offering competitive pricing for VoIP. Basically, the use of VoIP has become widespread enough that spammers and cyber criminals want in on the action.

The weaknesses of VoIP is in its very infrastructure and the protocol it uses in order to transport the voice data. It comes as no surprise that hackers are savvy enough to exploit these. Without getting into technical details, VoIP’s weakness figure prominently in its inability to adapt with some older and existing firewalls. For those of you who are not familiar with firewalls, they can either be hardware or software applications that secure your personal computers and/or your networks from unwanted traffic.

Needless to say, without a straightforward way to secure your voice data, they can easily be exposed to any form of intrusion. The Computerworld article mentions that it is extremely easy to listen in on a call. And on the other end, it is also not at all difficult to inject noise or spam into a conversation. This practice of injecting spam is already being practiced enough to earn it the term “spit”.

This practice of “spit” has attracted not just the spammers’ attention, but the scammers as well. The same article identifies hackers using a particular phishing exploit to imitate the interactive voice response system of actual companies. Imagine yourself using VoIP to call your bank’s automated voice response system to carry out some transactions but in reality, you are interacting with a scammer’s system. Can you say identity theft fast enough?

Security appliances and applications on the providers’ level is available, but implementing them correctly is the challenge that they face. There are many corporations these days who forbid their personnel from conducting sensitive conversations via VoIP, Hewlett-Packard for one. As a home user, you can take a cue from this type of corporate policy. Most banks and other financial institutions provide toll free numbers, so it is still safer to use the old conventional way of picking up the phone and doing your phone transactions this way.

There is nothing more convenient and fun to talk to relatives and friends in faraway places over the computer, but it is another thing to have your finances wiped clean by cyber criminals. And the threat is certainly real.
