Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a phone service which transfers your voice to the listener through the Internet. Voice is carried from the sender to the receiver through IP packets using specialized hardware. The VoIP phone service can be availed by using an Analog Terminal Adapter (ATA). The underlying principle is simple. VoIP works by digitalizing the voice and sending it in packets to the destinations where the digitalized voice is reconverted to the normal voice.
The biggest advantage is you can use VoIP at any place where there is broadband Internet connection. Just plug it to make and receive calls. Some of the distinct features of VoIP are voice mail, 3-way conferencing, caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, and on-line account management. All these features are free and you can obtain them by updating the software. There is also the provision to transfer images, videos, and texts. Because VoIP is over the Internet, you can check your voicemail via the Web – you may even attach a message that is sent to your computer or handheld.
Both individual and businesses can use VoIP phone services and this will mean a lot of savings. Needless to say, it is important you select the right VoIP phone service which best fits your needs and a reliable service provider. VoIP Phones are the rage today and are becoming increasingly popular with the general public as well. VoIP Phone Services offer many benefits over the traditional system, mainly its cheap price, several useful features and availability or access. As the broadband world expands, the demand for VoIP phones will also steeply increase.
There are some major hurdles which the intending Voip Phone users should know It is obvious that VoIP Phone service can be only as efficient as the Internet system or computer you using. When you experience power breakdowns, a Voip phone will not work, whereas a regular wall phone or conventional phone will. In areas prone to natural disasters like a blizzard, tornado or hurricane, the power is what fails first.
Communications often become critical in such situations and being stuck with only a powerless VoIP phone could spell disaster – unless you have your VoIP phone hooked up to a portable Wi-Fi battery operated laptop! Even then, you must bear in mind that your laptop or computer must be able to handle the phone calls as other programs running on your system may disrupt or distort your VoIP signals.
Another point to be noted is emergency 911 calls constitute a real challenge with VoIP. VoIP phones uses IP-addressed phone numbers and there is no way to know the geographic location with an IP address. VoIP is obviously is unsuited in an emergency of any kind! It is however expected that this drawback will be sorted out in the very near future as Voip phones become more commonplace. The VoIP phone service is certainly the ultimate in global communication that people have been wanting for! Many believe VoIP Phone Services will completely replace the traditional phone lines over time. But the revolution is just starting!
