LOL, followyourbliss. It wasn’t that he used his daughter, but that he used a kid and he really SUCKS at interviewing. At the end of the ad, he says “Everyone should try it…” The girl rolls her eyes. And can you blame her? What the f did he want her to say? “No, daddy, your product sucks..” or “Yes, daddy, that’s kind of why I”m sitting here with two dogs, like an idiot, what kind of q is that…” Hehe

net talk is better..no computer needed
February 18th, 2010 at 11:47 pm
actually, i did get this instead of spending a small fortune on a land line – if it wasn’t for crappy cell reception where i live, i wouldn’t have even bothered at all.
I agree – using his daughter is cheesy and exploitative – distasteful in my eyes… but I had hooked up with MJ long before they started running those ads

DO NOT BUY THIS TO REPLACE YOUR BASIC HOME SERVICE. It’s just not reliable enough. Support is likely some kid in a foreign country with a flow chart. I am very suspicious of any company owner who hides from his best customers and yet uses his daughter (if she really is) to sell this stuff. This gizmo is OK to send to family or friends in foreign countries so they can call you and you can call them.

this morning after waking my laptop (and relaunching MJ 3 times) it still won’t work for calling land lines … cell fones, no problem.. but when i dial a land line, it shows it’s connected but i hear nothing.
This has happened before and clears up on its own mysteriously.
These are the times I want to say MJ DOES suck.

Thats Right! I have had Ooma for 2 great years and have had 0 trouble! All calls are better then any landline and 100% better then Magic Joke ever was. I paid $200.00 new on Ebay for mine. No phone bills ever!
MJ should fold up until they finish working out bugs. Dan Barslow jumped the gun. and launched way too soon.

My pc is high end and my internet speed is 12mgs-There is nothing wrong on my end and never was. Thats another sales ploy.
I had that stupid junk thing for nearly 3 years (and 3 different units) and it was one bad call after another with lots of echo and dropped calls. Now, I have had Ooma for 2 years now and have not needed to contact anyone for any problems.
So, because the original suckers of that worthless harware bitched so much, they may have finally fixed a few things-great! .

I myself have issues sometimes with MJ – dropped calls, poor call reception (usually because both parties are using the speaker phone), but nothing compared to say, sprint cellular
February 19th, 2010 at 2:01 am
uh… gee, I’ve been using MJ since march 2008…. gee almost 2 years… you’d think that’d be long enough to decide if it’s total crap or not.
people bitching about bad call reception should look at all the links that could be causing a problem. their internet connection, their PHONE . . . their computer, etc and yes, their specific magic jack unit.

like anything, magic jack or OOMA for that matter won’t be around forever… things change
also, there is plenty of business to go around – competition and options are good.
Don’t forget about Skype – was here long before MJ or ooma showed up and it’s still around… each of these services has their pluses and minuses
Word of caution to everyone reading all of these comments – check the FACTS for yourself and don’t believe everything you read here as many people commenting are misinformed.

rob you blind??? what’s your net worth? a $100? at least you’re still richer than the state of california.
getting a phone number is not an additional feature… in fact, mj allows you to change your number once for free and then $5 for every time after that – although I would question what you are doing with the line to warrant that requirement

Magic Jack is junk. Period! Obviously, the guy doing the video review has not had it long enough to find this out-He will! I had it for 3 miserable years-I tried everything to get clear, clean calls with no white noise or echo and never did. I could never download large files while on the phone and the constant echo on both ends was pissing off callers. If you value friendships and have a need for clear calls-run away now from this thing! Get Ooma-no bills and crystal clear calls!
February 19th, 2010 at 4:14 am
Caution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This will cost more than you think.
If you aren’t satisfied with the service
A) they will refund you the cost of the jack
b) THEY WILL NOT REFUND ANY MONEY SPENT ON ADDITIONAL FEATURES SUCH AS A PHONE NUMBER OR MULTIPLE YEARS OF SERVICE PAID UPFRONT.
They also have no live customer service only a live chat. No complaints department. No phone number! You’d think they could afford a phone number after they rob you blind.

One big problem with Magic Jack that will prove to be their downfall against new competition.
You MUST have a computer and it MUST be turned ON when you want to make or receive ANY calls. For international calls, each person you are calling MUST also have a Magic Jack to take your call and both of you MUST have your computers turned on every single time.
Enter OOMA.
One time $249. No pc needed, no hassles.
Magic Jack is the Vonage killer.
But now OOMA is the Magic Jack killer

I used my Magicjack all the time, it is a fine product! I called Barrow, Alaska hotel to test its perfance and the call was crystal clear!!

They notified me when I tried to install that they had an update for windows 7. Once the update was installed it worked perfectly for me. Ive had it for 3 months so far with no problems regarding incoming and outgoing calls. The messaging service has worked perfectly as well. Sound quality is good. The same as a land line no better no worse. I’ll probably test it for a couple more months b4 I fire my phone company which im currently paying $50 a month for.

cool -thanks for the info!

OK. JUST GOT my magic jack. I’ll probably KEEP IT!! Works GREAT! On my mac, set up was easy. As for computer being sleep, on my G5 tower, if it goes to energy saver mode, i check “Wake for internet access” and this way if I get a call, while computer is sleep, it rings. I hear it. If I DON’T make it to phone, it goes to my email voicemail. Works GREAT!!!!
February 19th, 2010 at 7:53 am
works well for me – I use Google Voice number to keep my number consistent and for voice mails, etc.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:23 am
Stay away from this company. They double charge by “mistake” and when you try to contact them via customer service, …guess what? There is no phone number. You have to type to a person via live chat. Once they figured out that i was trying to get a credit for the double charge they simply stopped answering the chat. Then when i showed obvious signs of being upset she says “If you do not cooperate i will be forced to terminate this convo” I replied..”Excuse me?” – terminated- …..
February 19th, 2010 at 8:38 am
pretty much plug an play once you’ve set your mj account up and picked your number, etc… it says it can take several hours to start working, but I got a 2nd one that was fully functional within 30 min.
I’m not sure if the MJ will ring if your computer is asleep / energy mode settings will affect it. I know that when i shut my lid on my laptop magic jack won’t ring, but when I open it up in the morning (awakes from sleep) i don’t have to relaunch the MJ.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:40 am
Hi. I just ordered free trial magicjack today. Like you, i have a Mac. Using a g5 tower that I NEVER TURN OFF but it does go into energy mode, still, that shouldn’t affect the phone service. Correct? Also, I’m assuming the software works fine for Mac and its more or less, plug and play ?

hmmm… i find that whenever a plan says it’s unlmited, you have to read the fine print…
for example, with Skype unlimited calling, the fine print (last time i checked last year anyway) limited it to 3000 minutes – which sounds like a lot unless you do a lot of conference/internet calling.
